Recently, I conducted an SEO audit for a well-known builder in Kochi. Despite having a professional website showcasing impressive projects, they were visible in search results but in the down half and thus missing out on 60%+ organic traffic. Potential buyers searching for “luxury apartments in Kochi” or “builders in Ernakulam” were finding their competitors instead.
Using simple free tools such as Ahrefs or SEO Review Tools, Here are the five critical technical issues I discovered and how they could be fixed.
Issue #1: Messy URLs with Unnecessary Characters
What I Found:
Their property listing pages had cluttered URLs:
/projects%20list?id=456&location=kochi&type=apartment/about-us#team-section?ref=homepage/gallery?project=luxury-villa&page=2&sort=recent
Google was indexing multiple versions of the same page. The special characters made URLs look unprofessional and difficult to share.
How This Could Be Fixed:
- Create clean URLs like
/projects/luxury-villa-kakkanad - Remove all tracking parameters and special characters
- Set up 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones
- Implement canonical tags for the preferred URL versions
Possible Results:
Clean URLs could lead to better indexing within 2-3 weeks, improved click-through rates, and clearer site structure for search engines.
Issue #2: Extremely Slow Page Loading on Mobile
What I Found:
Pages took 7-8 seconds to load on mobile. Project photos were massive – some 5-6MB each. Multiple HD videos were auto-playing on the homepage. No lazy loading was implemented.
Since most property buyers browse on mobile, this slow speed was costing them leads.
How This Could Be Fixed:
- Compress all images and convert to WebP format
- Enable lazy loading for images and videos
- Remove auto-play videos, add click-to-play
- Eliminate unused JavaScript libraries
- Upgrade to better hosting with faster servers
Possible Results:
Page load time could drop to under 3 seconds. This would likely reduce bounce rates, improve mobile rankings, and keep potential buyers engaged long enough to see the projects.
Issue #3: Missing Alt Text on Images
What I Found:
Over 90% of their images had no alt text. For a builder’s website showcasing dozens of projects with hundreds of photos, this was a massive missed opportunity.
Google couldn’t understand what the images showed. They were invisible in Google Image Search, where many property buyers start their research.
How This Could Be Fixed:
- Add descriptive alt text to all project images: “3BHK luxury apartment interior in Kakkanad”
- Include location and property type in descriptions
- Add alt text to floor plans and amenities photos
- Create an alt text guideline for future uploads
Possible Results:
Within 3-4 weeks, project images could start appearing in Google Image Search. This could bring an additional 20-30% traffic from image searches, especially for high-demand areas like “apartments in Kakkanad” or “luxury villas Kochi.”
Issue #4: Missing Schema Markup for Properties
What I Found:
The site had zero structured data. When competitors’ properties appeared in search results with ratings, price ranges, and location details, this builder’s listings showed only basic text – just a blue link.
For real estate, rich results with property details, images, and pricing can dramatically improve click-through rates.
How This Could Be Fixed:
- Implement Real Estate schema markup on all property pages
- Add Organization schema for brand recognition
- Include LocalBusiness schema with office locations
- Add Article schema for blog posts about projects
- Implement breadcrumb markup for site navigation
Possible Results:
Rich snippets could appear in search results within 3-4 weeks. Property listings would stand out with images, pricing, and details. Click-through rates could improve by 30-50%, bringing more qualified leads actively looking for properties.
Issue #5: Robots.txt Blocking Social Media Crawlers
What I Found:
Their robots.txt file was blocking social media crawlers. When someone shared a property listing on Facebook, WhatsApp, or LinkedIn, it showed just a plain URL – no image, no description, nothing.
For a visual business like real estate where stunning project photos should drive engagement, this was a critical mistake.
How This Could Be Fixed:
Update robots.txt to allow social media crawlers:
User-agent: facebookexternalhit
Allow: /
User-agent: Twitterbot
Allow: /
User-agent: LinkedInBot
Allow: /
User-agent: WhatsApp
Allow: /Also implement Open Graph tags and Twitter Cards so social platforms can pull proper images, titles, and descriptions.
Possible Results:
Property links shared on social media would display beautiful project photos with descriptions. Social sharing would become a powerful marketing tool. Referral traffic from social media could increase by 40-50%, especially from WhatsApp groups where property buying decisions often happen.
Expected Overall Results
If all five issues were fixed, here’s what could realistically happen:
Within 4 Weeks:
- Clean URLs indexed properly by Google
- Page speed improved dramatically
- Images appearing in Google Image Search
- Rich snippets starting to show in search results
- Social sharing displaying proper previews
Within 8-12 Weeks:
- Rankings improved for local keywords like “builders in Kochi”
- Organic traffic increased by 50-80%
- More qualified leads from search and social media
- Lower bounce rates as pages load faster
- Better visibility against competitors
Long-term Benefits:
- Stronger online presence in the Kochi real estate market
- More project inquiries from organic search
- Professional brand image in search results
- Ongoing traffic from Google Image Search
- Effective social media sharing by clients and agents
Conclusion
These five technical issues are common but fixable. The builder had invested in a good website with quality content, but technical problems were preventing them from reaching potential buyers.
Technical SEO creates the foundation. Once these issues are resolved, all other marketing efforts – content, social media, paid ads – become more effective because the website can actually be found and properly displayed.
For builders and real estate businesses in Kochi competing for visibility, fixing these technical issues isn’t optional – it’s essential.
